Sumatra Island
Sumatra is one of Indonesia’s 18,000 islands. It’s the largest and probably the most varied groups of islands on earth. In Indonesia there are about 400 volcanoes and about 90 still active. The island of Sumatra traded with the kingdoms of China and India . When 7th century BC arrived the Srivijaya navel kingdoms established Sumatra exchanging with them. There was a great impact of Hinduism and Buddhism brought on by other neighboring kingdoms.

Warfare dominated the late 1500s and on into the mid 1600s as the Sultanate of Mataram expanded the kingdom further, and the Dutch dominating trade and colonization in Asia. Sumatra’s climate is tropical and sunny. The Sumatra’s range is from 72° to 81° while the rainfall changes. On December 26, 2004, one of the deadliest natural disasters in modern history occurred, the Indian Ocean earthquake struck the western coast of Sumatra. The earthquake and tsunamis killed over 220,000 people around the rim of the Indian Ocean.
